What is your true hourly wage?

Your normal hourly pay only counts the hours you are paid for. Your true hourly wage also takes out what you spend getting to work and adds the time you spend travelling. The result is what you really earn for every hour your job takes from your day.

The calculator shows two figures: your pay per hour after commute costs, and your pay per hour after both costs and travel time. The second one is your true hourly wage.

How the true hourly wage is calculated

The steps are simple:

  • Take your yearly pay and subtract your yearly commute cost.
  • Add your yearly paid hours and your yearly commute hours together.
  • Divide the first number by the second.

Why it matters

Two jobs with the same salary can have very different true hourly wages. Knowing yours helps you judge an offer, decide on a move, or see how much a shorter commute is really worth.

Commute cost calculator FAQ

How do I calculate my real hourly wage after commuting?
Subtract your yearly commute cost from your yearly pay, then divide by your paid hours plus your commute hours. The calculator does it as you type.
Why is my true hourly wage lower than my pay rate?
Because commuting costs money and takes time you are not paid for. Both lower what you earn for each hour your job takes.
Does this work for hourly workers?
Yes. Choose hourly wage, enter your rate and paid hours per week, and the calculator works out your yearly pay for you.
